This is feel-good, foot-stomping entertainment so good you’ll want to come back and see it again and again. The show started out at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017 and now, after four years in London’s West End, Olivier Award recognition, and multiple tours across Europe, Australia, and the fourth U.S. national tour in 2026, the show finally goes on the road at home. The West End production continues to run at the Arts Theatre. - London Olympia Theatre – the Shubert Organization and Trafalgar Entertainment have announced a 50:50 joint venture partnership for the ownership and operation of the new 1,575-seat West London theatre set to open in 2027. The venue, under a 70-year lease with Trafalgar Entertainment, will be the largest new theatre to open in London since the National Theatre in 1976. It forms part of the £1.3 billion redevelopment of the 140-year-old Olympia exhibition site into a cultural and entertainment destination near the Royal Albert Hall. The partnership marks the first time in a century that the Shubert Organization, which owns 17 Broadway theatres, has invested directly in a London venue. The new Olympia Theatre has been designed to accommodate large-scale productions while maintaining an intimate auditorium layout. According to the team behind the project, designers have prioritised audience comfort and accessibility, with high-speed lifts, multiple entry points, extensive bar space, premium lounges, and wider seating and legroom than typical West End theatres. Facilities include more than 80 toilets across multiple levels. The Olympia redevelopment will also include exhibition and conference facilities for up to 20,000 people, a 4,000-capacity live music venue operated by AEG Presents, hotels, offices, restaurants, a school, and a community theatre. Partnerships with organisations such as The BRIT School will form part of the site’s broader cultural offer. The Olympia Theatre has been designed by Haworth Tompkins, with contributions from Charcoal Blue, Buro Happold, Robert Bird Group, Avison Young, and AECOM. Make One London is handling the fit-out. The wider Olympia redevelopment has been co-designed by Heatherwick Studio and SPPARC.
- Mayflower Theatre – Not to be outdone by London’s new Olympia Theatre, Mayflower Theatre Trust Board approved a capital investment of over £12 million on building works across the venue with new rehearsal space, new “Grid” above the stage and new toilets. With the challenges of running a Grade II listed building and as with many other theatres both in the West End and around the country Mayflower recognises that the toilet facilities have not been a great experience for customers. This refurbishment during the summer of 2026 will provide much improved new facilities for many years to come. The toilet refurbishment project will increase total capacity from 43 to 62 cubicles (including 12 new universal facilities), reintroduction of urinals in male toilets, and 30 additional wash basins.
- Glorious! – Matthew James Morrison will join Wendi Peters in the 20th anniversary UK tour of Peter Quilter’s play, which runs opens in February 2026. - Ben Lewis – the West End star of The Phantom of the Opera and Company, has died aged 46. The news was confirmed by friend, tennis star and TV presenter Todd Woodbridge, who posted a tribute to Lewis on his social media channels. Lewis played a coterie of major roles across the world, appearing in the long-running West End production of The Phantom of the Opera and playing the Phantom in the original Australian production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies. Other West End credits include Larry in Marianne Elliott’s award-winning production of Company (photographed above) as well as the UK tours of Love Me Tender and The Bodyguard. Diagnosed with bowel cancer in February 2023, Lewis launched a fundraiser over the summer for himself and his wife. A tribute came from Cameron Mackintosh, who said: “It is a tremendous shock to hear the tragic news that the hugely talented Ben Lewis has passed away at the young age of 46. Ben was a towering presence and a great company leader when he played the title role of the Phantom in his native Australia and then again at His Majesty’s Theatre in London. Amongst his many other leading roles, Ben was especially impressive as the stoic, handsome long-suffering husband to Patti LuPone’s explosive vodka stinger laced Joanne in the recent Company revival at the Gielgud Theatre. Ben will be sorely missed by his many friends in theatre all over the world.
